Oral Cancer 101

Dentist Columbus

You may know that preventative dentistry helps protect your mouth from cavities and gum disease, but did you realize that your dentist plays an important role in screening for oral cancer, as well? Continue reading to learn the basics of this disease and the importance of regular dental checkups.

Symptoms
Oral cancer can cause a person to experience ear pain, a chronic sore throat, hoarseness, a change in voice, dramatic weight loss, and difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue and jaw. This disease can also cause unexplained bleeding in the mouth and numbness in the mouth, face, or neck. Oral cancer may cause persistent sores to form on the mouth, face, or neck that tend to bleed easily and fail to heal within 2 weeks. There may also be bumps, rough spots, or swellings inside the mouth or on the lips or gums. Finally, a change in your bite or the way your dentures fit may also be a sign of oral cancer. Contact your dentist or health care provider right away if you notice any of these oral cancer symptoms.

Risk Factors
According to the American Cancer Society, men are much more likely to develop oral cancer than women are, and men over the age of 50 are most at risk. Other factors that can increase your risk of developing this type of cancer include a family history of cancer, smoking or using smokeless tobacco, excessive alcohol consumption, extreme sun exposure, and human papillomavirus (HPV).

Diagnosis
During a dental exam, your dentist can examine your mouth, neck, and face for any signs of oral cancer. If your dentist finds a suspicious-looking area, then a biopsy may be taken for further examination. Early diagnosis of oral cancer can improve the chances of successful treatment, which makes regular dental checkups an important step in protecting your overall health.
