Patient Spotlight: My 6 Month Smile Journey | Weeks 1-3

Kelly Fry 6 Month Smile Progress

Thanks to the advice of my many friends, co- workers and family members who have had braces in the past, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect for my first few weeks in braces…pain, awkwardness and did I mention pain?!  Ok, so it really hasn’t been that bad!  The worst pain I have experienced so far was on the inside of my lips where the braces rubbed.  I learned to use the wax they gave me very quickly and it was a lifesaver!  I could feel my teeth start moving the very next day.  My teeth feel loose and they ache but are bearable with ibuprofen.  Eating has been a chore and I have lost 4 pounds the first 3 weeks!  That has been a nice, unexpected side effect!

I cut everything up into small bites, so I don’t have to bite into anything with my front teeth, which is painful, and then annoying later to get the food out of! I have also slowed my eating, as I have bitten the inside of my cheek several times by eating too quickly. By week 2 the pain was much more bearable and the inside of my lips were beginning to callous and get used to the braces.  I also have been using a straw to drink my coffee (which was hard to get used to) and my tea, as the clear brackets will stain.  Flossing has been a challenge and time consuming, but the “super floss” they gave me is amazing, I can’t image trying to floss without it.

Week 3 has been great, as I am used to the routine and my teeth aren’t aching as much.  I am very excited about my ortho visit tomorrow to see the changes in my teeth!  The first 3 weeks flew by so quickly!

Keep reading my blog to follow my smile journey!

Until next time, Kelly!
