Gum Evaluation: What Your Dentist Will Look for During a Dental Check Up

Teeth

A gum examination is one of the most important aspects of any visit to the dentist. Your gums are no less valuable than your teeth, and the sooner gum disease or another serious issue is diagnosed, the sooner it can be nipped in the bud. When your dentist examines your gums, he or she will be looking for the following things:

Swelling, redness, or bleeding. If you’ve noticed that your gums feel painful or tender, it usually means that plaque has built up on your teeth to the point that it has developed into gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. If your gums bleed easily after being brushed, it’s a strong indicator of gum disease. Your dentist can confirm the problem and provide you with treatment to stop the disease’s progress.

Unusual texture or color. Normal, healthy gums are firm, salmon-colored, and do not hurt if you touch them. If your gums lose their familiar texture, turn a different shade, or become overly sensitive, it may mean that they have become inflamed. Inflammation is usually caused by gingivitis; and if it is allowed to progress, it becomes periodontitis, the most advanced stage of gum disease.

Loose teeth. If the space between your gums and teeth becomes wider, it indicates that your gum disease has progressed. At this stage, your teeth begin to loosen and may even fall out. This is why it’s so critical to see your dentist often for a checkup.
